The Staples business credit card only offers store-specific spending and rewards because it’s not affiliated with a card network. So, even though the 5% rewards and Staples perks it offers might be impressive, the Staples business credit card will seriously limit the spending you can earn for.
The Staples business credit card doesn’t offer an intro APR period, but it does offer a deferred financing plan for business owners who are hoping to pay down big purchases gradually without accruing any interest.
How does that work, exactly?
When you make a Staples purchase of $299, $499, or $799, Staples can set you up on a payment plan to pay off this purchase in monthly installments over 6, 12, or 18 months, respectively.
As long as you make all of your monthly payments on time and you’ve paid off your purchase within the agreed-upon term, then you won’t have to pay any interest on your deferred financing.
When you sign on as a member of the Staples Business More Account, you’ll gain access to a one-off welcome offer.
You’ll simply have to make a Staples purchase of $150 or more within 45 days of opening your account, and you’ll receive a $50 discount on this purchase.
If you’re planning on making a big Staples purchase within the next 45 days, then now might be the right time to take the next step with the the Staples business credit card.
For every dollar you spend with the Staples business credit card, you’ll get a flat-rate 5% back in rewards.
As far as rewards rates go, a flat-rate of 5% is pretty solid, but keep in mind that they’ll only apply to Staples purchases.
There are also some secondary perks to choosing to spend with the Staples business credit card:
The Staples business credit card won’t charge you an annual fee to become a cardmember, so it might be an ideal no-fee supplement to another, more general business credit card.
What Staples business credit card features might make it worth the trouble of getting?
Here are the top two reasons that the Staples business credit card might be worthwhile for your business spending:
As far as cash back rewards go, 5% is pretty remarkable. Even more, the fact that Staples won’t cap how much cash back you can earn with rate makes the deal even sweeter.
If you’re spending big specifically with Staples, then these cash back rewards could be game-changers for your business.
The deferred financing plans you’ll be able to access by becoming a cardmember with the Staples business credit card are also a top perk.
The fact that you’ll be able to access interest-free deferred financing plan through this card is pretty nice, and it can help you make those big-ticket purchases you’ve been putting off.
And while these plans are certainly nice, they’re not quite the most flexible financing you’ll be able to find. In fact, many of the Staples business credit card’s top competitors will make it even easier for you to make big purchase and pay them off gradually, interest free with a 0% intro APR period.
Alternatively, let’s consider the main downsides to the Staples business credit card that should make you hesitate to sink the time into getting this store card:
For all of its virtues, the Staples business credit card is extremely limited in what it can offer your business. The fact that it only allows you to spend at Staples and Staples.com is an all-encompassing downside. And as a result of this limitation, any cash back you earn—no matter how easy it is to earn—will only apply to Staples purchases.
Not to mention, even the store-specific welcome bonus won’t measure up to the welcome bonuses you’ll see with some of the Staples business credit card’s top competitors.
In fact, the $50 discount you’ll be able to access with the Staples business credit card looks like small change when stacked up against the welcome bonuses of hundreds of dollars that other business cards can offer.
Plus, these bonuses won’t be store specific, so they’ll be able to go towards whatever purchase you deem fit for your business.
Meanwhile, the modest $50 bonus the Staples business credit card offers will only be applicable to a Staple purchase.
